Advertising does work!!
I have little idea as to what I'm going to see and do on this trip as Burma is a new destination for me. However, I do know that WiFi can be an issue in some parts so if this blog becomes a bit stop and start you will know why. I have also found that there now seem to be a few problems with the Blogger phone app which creates a few issues for me when trying to edit ...so my apologies in advance.
Hopefully the next post will be from Yangon (Rangoon) .... I'm not sure what name they use these days, it seems to be constantly changing. This is evidently a city of about 6 million people and the commercial hub of the country. When I was at school I learnt that Rangoon was the capital of Burma but I understand that the military government officially relocated the capital to the newly built city of Naypyidaw in 2006.
I am flying Singapore Air with only enough time to change planes at Singapore airport....that will save me from buying lots of expensive and unneeded things just to fill in time ....on the way home maybe.
I really had no intentions at all of going to Burma (yes they are calling Myanmar Burma again) until I got one of those pop-up ads on the computer advertising a free single supplement on a trip to Burma.... good enough reason to go !
It was with Explore, a U.K. travel company that offers small group grassroots trips. I have travelled with Explore in the past, to Spain and Morocco, and found them very good so it was worth a further look.
I thought about it for a very short while then rashly pushed the 'go' button. All done and no chance to change my mind.
An e-visa is required for Burma so I gave myself time to sit at the computer and fill in all the forms with ancient information that I had trouble remembering. What a surprise... a quick and simple job and the visa was approved in about 2 hours. That must just about be a record.
Today I dragged the bag out of the garage, dusted off the cobwebs and put it in the spare bedroom ready to fill with twice as many clothes as I'm ever going to need. Max knows the signs and went into his 'I'm very worried' space . I'm sure he has a plan to try and disable me so I can't go, as he stays as close to my feet as he possibly can, putting me in real danger of tripping over him. But I survived and I'm going! Sorry Max, but I know that Ainsley and Blair will look after you well.
